relationship advice (post new situation)

"Can I do anything for him?"

So the deal is I discussed with my boyfriend (not that anymore, I guess) about our situation and he verified that I was technically single with him taking care of his mom, and work, and school (and he only had to show up two hours of the day with him taking care of his mom). He's eighteen by the way.
This was a couple weeks ago.

Then I learn Wednesday morning from one of my teachers (she's his case manager) that his mother passed away Tuesday night. I didn't know his mom at all, in fact, I never met her but I feel so bad for him.
I want to be there for him, but I don't know if he'd let me or not. I'm not sure if he'd like someone just treating him like he's vulnerable and needs someone because he is an independent person and can take care of himself. It's just that I've lost a few people in my life and I know what it feels like and that you feel like you're alone and I don't want him to feel like that.
Should I tell him I'm there for him whenever he returns to school or should I figure if he needs me, he'll come find me?
